Any suggestions for a good external hard drive that I can use to switch files from an Ubuntu laptop to a windows desktop and back again?

Re: External Hard Drives?
Thu, May 14, 2009 - 8:03 AMsince ubuntu has had NTFS write support for a while now, any drive you can write to with your windows box will be useful on the ubuntu one.
so really the question becomes how many files, how large, how often? a thumb drive of sufficient size is always a great solution. if you need something larger, you can build a 500GB 2.5" external for ~$100. For reference, this is about the size of a standard iPod

Re: External Hard Drives?
Tue, September 1, 2009 - 2:40 AMI've been using just a plain old ordinary thumb drive. I know the question was about hard drives, but from the computer's perspective, they're no different. Formatted to FAT, it works just fine on both OSes.

Re: External Hard Drives?
Tue, September 1, 2009 - 6:24 AMI mostly use a thumb drive (FAT32) and occasionally hookup my Win ext drive (ntfs) to my Ubuntu machine. The main thing with an ext drive is that you have to remember to properly shut it down in Windows (ie, remove-hardware-icon in the tray) or it won't be readable by your Linux machine, as it'll be in a "in use" state.
And this is assuming you're using one of the latest versions that have NTFS support. I think I had to install NTFS-3g when I had 8.04
