Re: Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala announced
Mon, February 23, 2009 - 3:24 AMHow about better performance on humble hardware, once booted?
Running on a Via EPIA MII-12000, neither Hardy nor Intrepid were able to do so little as play an MP3 (without visualization) without tripping all over themselves and stuttering up a storm. Consequently, I've been running Slackware for some months now, but I really like Ubuntu. -

Re: Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala announced
Mon, February 23, 2009 - 6:10 AMOlder hardware will continue to get worse under Ubuntu if they continue along the same path. They always try to make it more efficient but it's more geared toward the average user who gets a new computer every few years and wants it to "just work". If you want to run 10 year old hardware you'll have to go with other distros most likely. People expect more out of their computers each year so there will be more stuff running and more resources used at boot time in the future. -

Tue, February 24, 2009 - 4:36 AMThis is only four-year-old hardware, but I take your point. Ah well, I'm upgrading my hardware next month anyway. -

Re: Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala announced
Tue, February 24, 2009 - 6:37 AMThat's weird. What are the specs? Runs ok on a 1.6Ghz ~700Mb ram from 2002. Graphics can be slow, but it's a crappy 32 Mb video card and so that goes for all OSs and modern multi Mb photos. -

Re: Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala announced
Tue, February 24, 2009 - 7:50 PMMobo: Via EPIA MII-12000 Mini-ITX
Proc: Via C3 Nehemiah 1.2GHz
RAM: 512 MiB DDR2 266 (appropriate for platform)
Chipset: Via CLE266 "Unichrome"
HDD: one 120GiB Seagate PATA-100 and one 250GiB Seagate PATA-100
Using all on-board peripherals (video, audio, Ethernet, etc.)
Video resolution is 1680x1050
Graphics are a little slow, but the chipset is optimized for multimedia, so MPEG decoding acceleration is in the Northbridge. Under Slack, it plays SD video just fine.
Anyway, as I mentioned before, I'm upgrading soon, and the new machine will be either an Athlon or a Phenom.
