Hardy Heron is scheduled for release on April 24th, 2008. In anticipation of this release, I'm creating a new thread where users here can post their experiences and issues with 8.04.

xorg.conf Is now completely different. I had a bitch of a time getting it to work with nividia cards & old mac's.. It actually inspired me to checkout the latest Debian being that ubuntu is debian based. I have to say i like it.. Seems more mature & thought out. It just worked and being that it's .deb package based i have everything i used in ubuntu. I did notice that 8.04 allows you to install it on your windows NTFS partition and make it a dual boot without having to re partition. I didnt try it but if you boot into windows pop in the 8.04 cd it will promt you. Pretty cool if you dont want to commit to repartitioning.

Wubi (allowing the dual boot from the windows install) is a Fantatsic idea, but didn't work for me, neither did the maual install-> i'm utterly cluess about partitioning and scanning the forums for hours didn't help. SO i just said goodbye to windows and took the plunge.

Somethings like youtube don't work so well, and there's a few quirks, but I'm liking what I see. And gadamm, it's just soooo PEPPY! FAST BLAM CLICK POP!

        luvs it!

Actually, there's an error in that article.

He says to add specific repositories for AWN when, in Hardy, AWN is in the Universe repositories...

Just doing "sudo apt-get install avant-window-navigator" works...

I upgraded my laptop (IBM/Lenovo R51) from 7.04 to 8.04 and now it suspends. Also upgraded my home desktop as well (IBM Intellistation Pro M, AMD Opteron x2), works as advertised. Really nice.

At work, I have moved one desktop machine (Dell Vostro 200 slim tower... crap machines really, I didn't make the decision ;) so far from Gutsy to Hardy. CJK text input is phenomenal (the user is from Taiwan, using SCIM, w/ zh-tw as the primary input), and stability is back (big issues w/ 7.04 and the Vostro's). I'll most likely roll that image as a keeper. I haven't upgraded any of our other Dell's (Dimension E521's... again, not the greatest machines) but am looking forward to it as Gutsy suffered from an annoying Tracker bug that caused non stop attempts to index nfs mounts, even if configured not too.

I have been holding off on any of the laptops as I had read about broken support for the 3945 Intel wireless chipsets (and building the Intel 802.11 stack even once is a chore). Soon though. When I do, I'll post the results.

Over all, I think this will be a solid LTS release. To me it's not as big a deal as when Dapper rolled out... That was a really big deal to me then, 8.04 is good though, really good. Ubuntu keeps setting the bar on the desktop.

    Thank you Canonical.

As an ubuntu noob, my upgrade from 7.04 went as sweet as a nut on both my dual boot laptop and PC. I've just self built a brand new PC as part of my shift to using linux solely and installed 64bit UbuntuStudio 8.04... neat, no problems, apart from somethings like running java applets in firefox require an annoying workaround that I haven't sussed yet (but thats a 64bit issue rather than an 8.04 issue)

I performed a fresh install from disk on an IBM Thinkpad 600X, and had no problems.
I use a Syba 10/100 Eithernet Card for my wired connection, and I use an Orinoco Wireless PCMCIA Card for wireless Access and I have encountered no problems.

The only issue I can see with this version is that my laptop does not completely power off when I choose shut down.
I just hit the power button and my laptop shuts off fine.

I know that there is an issue with syncing a PDA devise.
Before starting gnome-pilot, open a terminal and type:
        sudo modprobe visor

Then I can sync my PDA with Evolution Mail and Calendar.

I have also upgraded from Ubuntu 7.10 to 8.04 on a T2798 eMachine via the internet early one morning. The upgrade over the internet went fine.

Anyone got advice or resources you can point me to for help getting wireless working. I'm on a dell D620 laptop w/ an Intel PRO/wireless 3945ABG.

This is my first try at linux so be gentle. :-)

I would recommend the ubuntu forums... search first (I've never had a problem I couldn't find solved for someone else there:-) but if no joy, I suspect you would get a faster turnaround on question there. Do you not have a network symbol in the top panel? If not, try right clicking on the panel, selecting add to panel and searching for something like "nm-applet 0.6.6". Other than that I can't be much help... wireless worked pretty much out of the box for me
