So I installed the older distro of Ubuntu for Power PC Macs, (pre-Intel). And at first I was disappointed because Adobe Flash and the other major plugin makers don't make versions for Linux under PPC. They do make versions for PPC Mac OSX and for Linux x86 PC architecture, but not for Linux on PPC Mac. But then later I started having problems with my slow OSX getting slower due to so many Flash-based ads on all the web pages. So, when I only needed text, like in E-mail, or photos, like on Tribe, etc., and when I didn't need fancy entertainment video or animation, I now go to my Power PC Mac with the old Ubuntu on it. And, because it Flash won't install on it, it can't process any of the tons of Flash-driven ads, which means that, now that only photos and text are processed, my computer is super fast. So, when I just need info, text or photos, I can turn to this great distro that, as it turns out, is all the better for not being compatible with Flash. Then, when I want to do video stuff, then I go to my Mac OS for that. So I've got a dual boot situation working great, (not a true dual boot, since the Linux PPC Ubuntu is on an external FireLite drive and the Mac Hard drive has OS X).

Re: When Limitations Turn Out To Be Lucky Breaks
Tue, August 12, 2008 - 2:55 AMThat is one way to accomplish it.
Another is to use the Flashblock extension for Firefox, which I highly recommend just for its annoyance-mitigation powers. -

Sat, August 23, 2008 - 1:59 AMYou're right. It's funny, but I only heard about Flashblock just a few days ago when a friend who is a computer professional happened to stop by. -

Sat, August 23, 2008 - 6:06 AMHuh. I guess we need to make more noise about it (I am a computer professional).
Still, I have found over the years that choosing unusual platforms (Amiga, then Linux) has saved me from a lot of the hassles of the mainstream. -

Thu, November 6, 2008 - 2:18 AMIt is a bit more capable, yes. Flashblock has the advantage of showing you where the missing flash is, and one click will re-enable any single specific flash, though.
